The Wildwood Police Department said on Facebook on Wednesday, June 12 that it was aware of a social media post promoting a beach pop-up party on the weekend of Saturday, June 15. Police said the organizers were identified and the events were canceled on their social media sites.
The department also asked those in charge of vacation rentals to be careful.
"We are working with local and state agencies to promptly shut down this unsanctioned event, if it takes place, and to hold all participants accountable," Wildwood police said. "We encourage all rental property owners and motel owners in Wildwood to use extra precautions when renting during this weekend. These groups are known to take over rental properties and cause property damage."
The warning came a few weeks after the city declared a state of emergency early in the morning on Monday, May 27. Police reported "civil unrest" from groups of teens and young adults during the previous two nights.
In nearby Ocean City, a 15-year-old was stabbed in the stomach during a large fight on that city's boardwalk on Saturday, May 25. A teen was arrested in Pleasantville on Tuesday, June 4, and charged with first-degree attempted murder.
Wildwood leaders are considering updating rules about curfews for children on the Wildwood Boardwalk and backpacks on public beaches. The board of commissioners was scheduled to discuss an ordinance to make those changes during a meeting at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12.
Wildwood isn't the only Jersey Shore city trying to stop "pop-up" parties and other types of chaotic nighttime scenes. Long Branch increased police presence after an event was advertised on social media that was scheduled for Saturday, June 8.
Long Branch's mayor said police did an "outstanding job" over the weekend and the city will continue taking a "no tolerance approach" to unsanctioned parties.
